Modern Matriarch: Carissa Moore

Carissa Moore is a spearhead in the sport of surfing and in redefining gender roles. As a five-time world champion and Olympic gold medalist, Moore has shown a new level of mastery in surfing for both men and women in the sport. Excelling in her career, Moore hasn’t forgotten her heritage, in fact she wears it proud on her sleeve. As a Native Hawaiian, in the Olympics she chooses to wear the flag of Hawaii instead of the flag of the United States to honor her birthplace, culture, and roots of being born and raised in Honolulu, on Hawaii. Moore published the book: Hawaii Gold: A Celebration of Surfing, to further appreciate the history and culture of Hawaii.

Moore is also a passionate female advocate in the male-dominated world of surfing, and has become a role-model for countless female surfers. Recognizing the power of community in fostering empowerment and supporting mental health, she founded the charitable organization Moore Aloha. Hosting programs, events, and gatherings, Moore aims to inspire and support the next female generations by facilitating a safe space to build community, culture, and meaningful relationships.

And a special thanks to Matriarch in the Making Intern, Lili Menkal for this nomination.
