The Body Knows the Snake: Trusting Somatic Wisdom in Uncertain Times
Written by Maija West
To my beloveds,
Yesterday, in the dim threshold of my garage, reaching for water, the sole of my foot told me something my eyes had not yet seen.
Two cylinders. Quiet under the ball of my foot. One under my arch. The body didn't wait for my eyes. It didn't wait for my brain. Before language, before comprehension, before fear even had a name — I was four feet away. I turned to see a slithery tail disappearing into the dark. A young snake, maybe a rattler, gone before I could know for certain.
The body knew.
This is the intelligence we are so rarely taught to trust. Not what we produce. Not what we accomplish. What we feel — in the sole, in the gut, in the chest. The body is always speaking. It does not traffic in productivity. It speaks in sensation, in signal, in sudden knowing.
I have been sitting with that moment ever since. Because I think it is exactly where we are right now — all of us. Our bodies are registering something that our eyes cannot fully see and our minds cannot fully name. The political unraveling, the environmental grief, the social fracturing — this danger is atmospheric. A slow pressure change, like weather deepening in the bones.
And our nervous systems — carved over millennia to respond to the rustle in the grass, to danger with a body and a speed and a direction — have no template for this moment. The body keeps sending the signal: something is deeply wrong. It reaches into its ancient library and finds nothing that fits. We may have to go all the way back to the time of the dinosaurs to find the last occasion our combined DNA was asked to hold something of this magnitude.
So we go numb. Or we fragment. Or we cannot get off the couch. Or we hyper-function until we crash.
All of it is the body trying to protect us from something it was never built to name.
In a world that measures worth by output, the invitation of this moment is different. It asks us to move slowly. Thoughtfully. To let the body lead — not the calendar, not the to-do list, not the performance of being okay. The foot that felt the snake did not produce anything. It simply knew. That knowing saved a life.
I feel this in myself — the difficulty keeping my body moving and awake, the profound effort it takes some days just to stay present. I name this not to worry you, but because I believe that naming our discomfort honestly is the very foundation of a community that can actually hold each other.
So let us practice a different measure of a good day. Not how much we got done. But how present we were in our bodies. Whether we listened when they told us to slow down, to stop, to feel. Whether we let sensation be information — not weakness, not failure, but wisdom moving through flesh.
This is not escape. This is restoration. This is how we retell the story of what it means to be human — not as a machine that produces, but as a creature that belongs to the great ecological family of life. A creature that knows things, through the skin, through the gut, through the quiet signals of a body that has always been trying to bring us home.
Keep listening. Move slowly when slowly is what is needed. Trust what you feel before you can name it. The body knows the snake.
We will stand shoulder to shoulder through this great change. Not because it is easy. But because we choose to belong to one another anyway.
I choose you. All of you. Come when you need to. The fire will be lit.
With love,
Maija
